MENISCUS SURGERY VS. PHYSIOTHERAPY

Outcome comparison up to 2 years

Is surgery the most appropriate course of action after a meniscus tear (knee)?

A study in 2016 by Kise et al investigated the outcome of patients with meniscal tears in the knee if they were to undergo arthroscopic surgery followed by physiotherapy vs. following a 12-week physiotherapy exercise program alone.

The patients were then evaluated at 3 months, 12 months, and 2 years following completion of their treatment.

Results?

🔸Both groups improved significantly

AND

🔸There was no significant difference between the surgical group vs. physiotherapy group in terms of functional improvement (as evaluated by validated outcome measure KOOS) at 3 months, 12 months, and 2 years.

Moreover, the physiotherapy group had a significantly greater improvement in leg muscle strength as compared to the surgical group.

What this means for you?

🔸Physiotherapy alone can be just as effective as compared to an arthroscopic surgery for a meniscal tear

🔸BUT: you can avoid being exposed to unnecessary risks, expenses, and time off-work from a surgical intervention

Conclusion:

Surgery may not always be the best first course of action. Take the time to consult with your physical therapist who can help determine the source, extent, and prognosis of your injury.
